Sheene Manor has stucco (a form of render) rustication to the corners of the building. Drywall replaced this plaster in the 1950s. The plaster comprised three layers, which were rock-hard and difficult to see through. As mentioned above, horsehair plaster isn’t typically used nowadays. Until the 1950s, houses were constructed with wood lathe and plaster instead of more lightweight and efficient drywall. Creating curves and custom-designed arches are much more comfortable with horsehair plaster. The last three photographs are of 23 Chiswick End with the rendering removed. Horsehair plaster walls are much more contour than drywall. There is an example of pargetting in Chiswick End (see photograph). The surface is then sometimes combed into patterns (pargetting) before receiving coats of limewash. First, you’ll repair the lath and then patch the hole. The surfaces are sometimes finished flush or recessed to the framework. 10 to 15 Estimated Time 1 to 2 hours, not including drying time If you’re dealing with damaged lath and plaster wallsfor example gaping holes in the wall because of electrical workhere are techniques you can use to repair them. This is an external covering, traditionally of lime, sand and varying proportions of cow dung mixed with chopped straw or hair. More generally plaster is a finishing material for walls and ceilings rather than a load-bearing material and is likely to be present in the majority (if not all) buildings in the village. The old vicarage was described in 1836 as an old, small lath and plaster building. Our polling is our North Star, Robinson said. This is situated on the east side of the High Street next to the Primary School. A good example in Meldreth is Keys Cottage at 70 High Street. It essentially uses plaster rather than daub as the material between a wooden framework. This will work with switch and plug receptacle boxes. Lathe and plaster is a more recent building technique using a similar approach to construction as wattle and daub. This is a great method to install a plug electrical box into lath and plaster.
